Description

Individuals revealing preferences and perspectives by their choices and explanations of choice.

Instructions

Ask group to divide themselves by choosing which thing they are more like.  For example:

"Mountains versus the beach.  If you are more like the mountains, go to this side of the room.  If you are more like the beach, go to the other side."

Once they have divided themselves, ask some people to tell why they chose that particular thing.

Here are some sample choices:

+  Mountains  OR  the Beach
+  Hammer  OR  Screwdriver
+  Balloon  OR  Flower
+  Wood  OR  Iron

Facilitator Notes

With some groups, you might want to allow people to stay in the middle and not make a choice one way or the other.

There is a variation of this, especially for younger audiences, called "On the Bus, Off the Bus".  In this variation, each participant simply expresses their preference for things by moving to one side (on the bus) or the other (off the bus).  Examples:

+  Hot dogs  OR  Pizza
+  Vanilla  OR  Strawberry
+  Swimming  OR  Running
+  Britney Spears  OR  Madonna

This activity allows the group to see what they in common are where they have diversity.
