Description

Yet another way of exploring diversity and common experiences.

Instructions

Ask the group to divide into the following sub-groups: Only Children, First Born, Middle Children, and Youngest.  If the groups are large, they can subdivide within those groupings.

Each group is tasked with answering 3 questions (give them 10-20 minutes):

+  What are/were the disadvantages of this position in the birth order?
+  What strengths/skills were learned as a result of being in this position?

The groups must then present their findings to the other groups.  If time is short, get them to select their top 3 observations with the most energy around them (or that were experienced unanimously).

Facilitator Notes

Encourage the group to listen to the other groups with curiosity, keeping in mind that these people are not your siblings.  Refrain from sarcasm at anything you hear.

It is interesting to note that most could see what the advantages are in the birth order of their siblings, but most don't realize what the disadvantages are.  This is a rare opportunity to hear what it was like to live in their sibling's shoes.
