Problem All ages 5 30 mins Blindfolds, trees, & lots of rope University? Monica Nissen

Description

A blindfolded group navigation challenge.

Instructions

Create a maze ahead of time by wrapping and tying rope around trees in a maze pattern at about waist-level.  (You can also tie rope to rope.)

Bring the group to the entrance of your maze and have them don blindfolds.  (You might also take them on a blind Sherpa walk to get to that point.)  Although everyone is blinfolded, only one person can be in the maze at a time.  Each person only has a certain amount of time 'underwater' (in the maze) due to limited 'oxygen'.  Clothespegs are used to mark where previous 'divers' have gotten to, and the other folks (still blindfolded) can coach the current diver along in the maze.

The objective might be for the whole group to come out the other side, or it might be for them all to find a 'treasure' in the middle.

Facilitator Notes

You might want to work out a good pattern on paper first, based on the trees that are in the area.  Creating a few dead ends also adds to the challenge.

One variation might be to challenge the group to complete the activity in total silence.  Another might be to allow everyone in the maze (still all blindfolded) at the same time.

As with all blindfold activities, participants should be given the options of either just closing eyes, or participating as a sighted observer who can share insights with the group once the activity is over.
